Helping with School Safety

The Department of Homeland Security just rolled out a website completely focused on school safety. They teamed up with the Department of Education, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services to provide school and districts with actionable recommendations to create a safe and supportive learning environment where students can thrive and grow.

We know that the threats facing our schools are many and complex. Today, schools must address everything from mental health to physical security in order to make the biggest impact possible. www.schoolsafety.gov  covers all of this and more. There are resources to help you address bullying, cyberbullying, school security personnel, physical security, training, exercises, drills, mental health, school climate, emergency planning, and even recovery after an incident. Approaching this topic from all angles is the key to success.

The creators of SchoolSafety suggest that you start by taking an assessment that leads to a personalized action plan. They also have low to no cost actions your school can take to make immediate safety improvements. Once you’ve taken these immediate actions, they have a School Safety Readiness Tool that will help you continue making your school safer. Covenant Security Equipment can help you with the equipment and technology for increasing physical security on your campus.

As the K-12 School Security Resource Guide prepared by the Department of Homeland Security says, “New and inventive security practices and technologies are released every day. DHS encourages the K-12 community to be forward-thinking when it comes to all aspects of their business practices, particularly security.”  (p. 15)

The Guide also has a list of “evolving products and technologies” (pp.17-24) including measures like closed-circuit video, locks, motion detectors, and gunshot detection systems. While not listed in this guide, we believe our bullet resistant panels are one of these inventive security technologies that could save lives. Strategically installing these panels in the hallways and doors of your school, they could effectively stop a bullet from entering a classroom. This could protect your children while also giving teachers peace of mind knowing they have this added level of protection.

We have in-house estimators who can help you figure the number of panels you might need and what level of bullet resistance would be best for your school.

Approaching school safety from many angles is the best way to set your school up for success. Remember that Covenant Security Equipment is ready to partner with you to improve the physical safety of your school.  We are here for you.
